Sleepy Hollow 1.06: “Wrong does not cease to be wrong because the majority agrees.”

Guest: Cana

In Sleepy Hollow’s return episode, Ichabod is kidnapped by the Freemasons and given the chance to get rid of the Horseman once and for all. The only catch is that he has to take himself out in the process. Along the way we’re given a weak reason for why Ichabod is connected to the Horseman (the first reason worked better); Cana doesn’t understand Abbie’s assertion that Death is the embodiment of sin, and we both figure that the Sin Eater has got to have the most disgusting and unfortunate power ever.

Episode 6: The Sin Eater

Quotes of the Podcast: “It’s unsanitary as hell, and how the heck do you even discover you can do something like that? Unless you had a kink for blood, how the heck do you just one day randomly drink someone’s blood and purge them of their sins?”-Alta

“What were some of the sins that he was absolving these people who were in prison for? I get that that’s what he was supposed to do, but I don’t know. I’m kind of side-eyeing and judging, ’cause I’m like maybe those people should’ve died with those sins.”-Cana

“His sin is not even a sin at all. I think it’s so ridiculous. [….]. I just feel like it wasn’t even his fault that happened. His White Guilt was so strong, basically. And so since [Cana] remembered, and I’m glad you did, Ro’kenhrontyes saying ‘your sins are not mine to judge.’ Of course not, because he didn’t actually do anything wrong! Literally, because the Sandman judges you for what you did wrong, and Ichabod did nothing wrong. He should have a clean conscious, but he decided to do the most with the guy’s death.”-Alta

“So what memory does the Horseman have that would connect him to Ichabod? Otherwise it’s one-sided. So he would’ve drank that stuff, and it would’ve been S.O.L ’cause the Horseman would’ve still been around like ‘Ha!'”-Cana

  1. it was my fault the episode was late, y’all.

Orlando Jones’s twitter game is on point too. He told Black men to step up their game because a white dude just bowed to a Black woman on TV. hehehe.

Bernard was handsome. Was he a mason?
Demons are malevolent, So he’s getting his kicks by messing with people’s heads.

The demons continue to have pale skin. 😉

Well, there was that line Katrina whispered about evil prevailing with good men do nothing. I guess that weighed heavy on his heart, but still he didn’t sin because he tried even when it was too late. But he didn’t know it was too late until the demon shot Bernard. I wonder if Bernard had family. It should have been like Ichabod took up Bernard mission after he died.

Ichabod is kind of a place holder for Sgt. Corban.

Purge yourself! I love the accent. lol YOU ARE SANCTIFIED!
“Say my name say my name!”

Remember when Abbie said the sin-eaters power was a gift …? Abbie, gurl. That’s manipulation.

That’s the thing about the sin eaters. Priest’ could also be considered them. When people confess it’s kinda like the priest takes on that burden and that’s part of the reason Priest’s are so messed up. They carry the guilt of holding that secret. This is why I think it’s better for the congregation to prospectively confess to God (and then maybe to the authorities if what the did was that messed up) and not mess around with a middle man. That’s the thing about priests and therapist, though I also hear therapist have a high rate of suicide from carrying around that burden, but priests can’t do that because it’s a mortal sin. Now I wonder if they put that in there to keep priest from offing themselves very often. And now I’m thinking about Constantine again.

Instead of it being a sin eater (someone really didn’t want that idea go) they should have just had a witch do it. It would have made more sense.

Abbie’s so little and Ichabod is so thin. They just fit together like family. I can’t even.

Abbie was telling Crane something …

Okay I’ma stop hating on Katrina.

Ro’kenhronteys made Ichabod sit down because like even if he did sin (eh he didn’t) it wasn’t the kind of sin Ro’kenhronteys would have punished. He did try to help out his neighbor, sure he failed but he didn’t deny him. He did all he could under the circumstance. And I guess that could irritate Ro’kenhronteys because Ichabod was wasting his time while he was trying to deal with Abbie.

      That’s awesome! Lol.

      Lol.

She did. Girl, you don’t know his life. It reminds me of when Prue got the power of Empathy. She could literally feel what other people felt, emotional and physical. It messed with her head so bad to the point where she was hiding in the basement and rocking back and forth. The priest the power used to belong to kept calling it a gift, and Piper went, “Okay, can we stop calling this a gift? It’s clearly not.” I don’t remember if she said the second part, but Prue’s telekinesis was going out of control and she was being reduced to a shell of a person, and the priest kept saying she had a gift. Smh.

Woah, really? Where did you hear that?

And I guess that could irritate Ro’kenhronteys because Ichabod was wasting his time while he was trying to deal with Abbie.

      Lmao. That’s true.

  2. Enjoyed your discussion.

AMEN regarding what the Sandman demon told Ichabod in episode 3! Does he *really* have no sins for which he needs forgiveness, as Abbie did? That seems not right to me (as I went on about at some length in my recent SFC post – http://thescifichristian.com/2013/11/reflections-from-sleepy-hollow-1-6-the-sin-eater/.) I found the Arthur Bernard plot very problematic and unsatisfying.

Yes, Quakers (Religious Society of Friends) are pacifists, and were opposed to slavery. They were the “first corporate body in Britain and North America to fully condemn slavery as both ethically and religiously wrong in all circumstances” (http://trilogy.brynmawr.edu/speccoll/quakersandslavery/).

woot! I should have remembered because in HS they took us on Quaker trips and stuff.
