Canadian Promo It’s super dark.
Please refrain from posting spoilers for the upcoming episodes/general spoilers in this post. This is the spoilers/speculation post for episode 1 and episode 1 only. In a rare moment of empathy, Rebekah (guest star Claire Holt) is deeply touched by Stefan and Elena’s devotion to one another.
I guess. But why is this included in the synopsis?
Lol at that sentence. Lol at the entire synopsis tbh.
My spec is that, since Rebekah, Stefan and Elena all end up in cages, Rebekah will hear all the SE drama (“Stefan, I’m dying”, “Nooo”, and probably “Kill me, but let her/him go!”) and will be so ~touched that, later, when she is in a position to help them, she will. Thus, Rebekah will transition from Villain Who Killed The Protagonist to just the show’s mean girl. Because humanity and stuff.
The part about “a rare moment of empathy” bugs me. TVD is all about their villains, bad boys & girls having epic emo moments that show their ~humanity. Damon, Klaus, Ripper Stefan, Rebekah (with Matt in 314), Elijah etc. It happens all the time and is not something special (Like, Kol is the only bad guy I can think of right now who has never had such an emo moment. Bless, and please never come back, k.)
Poor Rebekah, I hope they didn’t give her too many cringeworthy lines when they are having her praise SE. – Hey, maybe this scene will be what inspires her to go apologize to Matt? SE makes her heart grow a few sizes.
I think that’s what will happen too. We do see that Elena is in a cage at some point. For some reason I never considered that she might be among the vamps kidnapped. I’m wondering how Bonnie gets into the cage? Idk, but I do think Elena will have a cage moment with Stefan and Rebekah will be in her own little cage experiencing a moment of growth or whatever. Because like her brother said, love like that doesn’t just die. Or something.
I was going to say something about Rebekah being touched by the love between a 100-year-old man and an 18 year old, because I was going to ask how many of such stories are a success in TVD world, but I just remembered that Elena is now a vamp, so no need to ever introduce a character who is cynical about old vamps hooking up with humans who can’t vote.
I know right? It’s not rare. And Olu pointed out that they used the word empathy in the wrong way.
I’m sure the camera will zoom in on her while Stelena talk and she’ll swallow and look down, all contemplative about the kind of love she wants. And then maybe after she’s rescued she goes home to Klaus to tell him what she’s learned about love, and he kicks her out, so her homeless storyline begins (if they’re still doing it).

I was just thinking that. The ladies haven’t had a funeral. IDK what that thing was with Caroline but she didn’t get a casket. So far Richard and whoever is at the church. I feel like there’s no God in this verse. I feel like if there were more characters would be praying or being mad at god. But there’s random church scene … whatever.

Because there are so many chars on this show – way more chars than these writers can handle. So either they’ll focus on giving Hayley a story and short-change the non-Trio regs in return or they’ll just keep her around without any purpose (kind of like Meredith and Katherine nowadays). I’m not looking forward to either.
Having said that, I do think that Rebekah/Hayley could be an interesting ship.
I’ve always thought that Jeremy has been boring since Anna left and that Bonnie has been poorly written once they turned her into a complainer. So if Hayley eats into a boring Jeremy and Matt clean up tables at the grill storyline where they magically find a $20 on the ground that somehow relates to the plot at the finale… I’d prefer Hayley ^^ It’s pretty obvi all Bonnie is gunna do is get mad AGAIN that people want her help and then she’s gunna turn on them. I’m open for something knew and exciting.
I don’t want Hayley for the whole season, not if she’s going to be used for Forwood stuff. Plus, she’s only here to tell us how Tyler broke his bond or whatever, and unless they turn their relationship romantic, I don’t know what she could be doing for a whole season.
But you never minded all of the Originals in season 3, right? Lol.
Since I’ve loved Tonkin in every show she’s ever been on, the more eps she is in the better! She could be falling in love with Rebekah, obviously! Bekah needs a non crappy, supernatural, love interest.

Oh darnit that video got me! It makes me dread the new season because we all know, despite the frantic developing of “dark Bonnie”, that Bonnie will never take a stand, never not give that group of ungrateful A-holes everything she has, never not hurt herself in the process. It’s a said thing, but it’s her “personality” and as long as her lack of self-esteem or acceptance causing her to do more than she should is being lauded as “heroic” it’ll never change.
Yep. *Sigh.* It would be the greatest thing in the world if this season surprised me in a good way wrt Bonnie’s arc and her declaration to not be pushed around anymore.

Unfortunately I think it is very, very unlikely that it’s Caroline. However, I do think it could be Elena and it’s a scene where the writers are trying to create a big friendship moment. Like, I could see them having Bonnie say that Elena’s the first vampire she’s invited in and going on how they are ~sisters and ~bonded for life. What makes me question this scenario, though, is this one spoiler about Bonnie and Elena going seperate ways for a while at the beginning of S4 (if I remember that correctly).
If it’s not Elena, I suspect it’s Damon and it’s about the two of them teaming up for plot purposes and snarking. Didn’t JP tweet about enjoying their snark? Although I guess there’s an outside chance it’s Stefan and it’s about reinstating him as the good brother/showing he has regained Bonnie’s trust. Ugh.

Yikes, I forgot to edit the post here, but yeah I went back and re-read it and I realized it was talking about episode 2.
The first thing I thought about was Charmed. I don’t remember if you watched it, but one of the sisters developed the power of Empathy in the first season. I hope this isn’t how they’ve resolved to make Elena stand out from the rest as a vampire.
I remember that spoiler too, and that’s why I put Elena last as a possibility. But maybe this will be their last scene before they start doing their own things? It always happens. In season 2 they hung out at the carnival in ep 2 and then didn’t share a scene until the 6th episode. Maybe Elena comes to see Bonnie in order to “empathize” about how she knows she sacrificing a lot for her. And since Carina McKenzie has decided that the scene is great, Bonnie probably lays flat as a doormat for Elena.
I know right, re: Jeremy. You know how I feel about his ghost power, so I’m not thrilled about anything that lets him further encroach in an area where he doesn’t belong. Will Bonnie ever summon another ghost with Jeremy on the show as medium?

I have no idea, but the first thing that popped into me head is that they’re going to physically hurt her.
I need this episode to air so that I can get it over with. I officially have a huge problem with the fact that any movement in Bonnie’s story stems from Elena. It honestly did not use to be like that, but as of season 3, her powers manifest based on how they can be used for Elena. Now her sense of self is going to be crippled because of…..how much she could and couldn’t do for Elena? Will Elena even be written to care about this? That’s the funny part. She’s not gonna care. Maybe, and that’s a huge maybe, she’ll say some generic words of encouragement and then she’ll go fret about the things/people/issues that actually matter to her. They talk about how amazing it is that Bonnie’s willing to go far for Elena, but there’s zip about anything Elena feels for or does for Bonnie. Like, they’re not even amazed by the friendship. They’re just in awe of how much she’s willing to suffer for her. It’s a dismissal. Making a big deal about Bonnie’s loyalty and self-sacrificial tendencies is actually the best way to dismiss her. How many of the people fawning over how loyal and self-sacrificial Bonnie is think about her beyond that? “Ooo look at how much she’s willing to sacrifice for Elena!” It’s a blurb, an acknowledgement, and then they move on to the (female) characters who actually have lives.
The way Bonnie uses her power is no longer dynamic, because the plot is no longer dynamic. Every time, it’s about making things easier for Elena. When was the last time Bonnie looked out for the actual town? Well, when was the last time the town was in danger (like with the tomb vamps and even Klaus breaking the curse) instead of Elena.
I have a rant brewing regarding the witches being the servants of nature and how, from what we’ve been shown, it’s pretty much just hot air. I might do it on the podcast for the premier or I might wait until the podcast for episode 7 since a spoiler for that episode is what sparked the thought/frustration.
Whether he’ll come bearing supernatural gifts of his own or not, vampire hunter Connor (played by Todd Williams) will certainly shake things up in Mystic Falls. “Todd is a heck of a guy. He comes in being the new ‘B.A.’ vampire hunter. Previously our only vampire hunter was the history teacher,” Zach said. “Now we have this ‘Blade’-style vampire hunter. And not just because he’s black, but because he’s so badass. He’s definitely a force to be reckoned with.”
Holy crap, a White person on the TVD crew sees race and acknowledged that a character is Black! And compared him to an iconic Black character! Stop the presses!
Zach cautiously revealed that Matt will have an “altercation” with Connor. “Previously Matt has been divided on whether he’s with vampires or against vampires. But with Elena being a vampire, he’s now on the opposite side of the law.”

There’s Liz telling the Pastor he has no idea what he’s doing. According to the comments, there’s a shot of when Damon compelled Elena to forget his love confession, there’s a new angle of when Bonnie passes out, and there’s Elena saying she’s dead (or dying, I don’t remember). Those are the differences I saw.
Have to agree with everyone the promo shoot is quite bad lol. I thought that there was at least suppose to be at least a story but nope it looks like they took individual pictures, photoshopped everyone in one pic and added some random background. Seriously even the clothes are like ”what”
I dont think the Canadian promo really had anything new, I also thought it was UJ but I dont know.
Also about all the latest spoilers are the writers serious? Zach’s interview about Matt I have no words lol. The Salvatores have nothing to say to Matt seriously the writing on this show is really creepy and questionable. Im sure fans will think this is normal just how it is normal that Bonnie is always willing to die and risk her health for Elena yet we have never seen Elena do anything for Bonnie.

Elementary is fun, but it sucks when I compare it to Sherlock which is mind blowing. I’m enjoying it so far! The new shows that are exploding with epic moments for me are Revolution, surprisingly, and Last Resort.
Also Hart of Dixie just came back and is full of adorableness. Fringe is back full of epic future goodness. Haven and Supernatural are back. /tv everyday
I’m loving Elementary. Thursday’s episode was hilarious and I loved the mystery they had to solve. I don’t watch BBC Sherlock. I never would’ve checked out Elementary if it wasn’t for the BBC Sherlock fans bashing Lucy Liu’s casting as Watson, but I’m glad I did.
I love that they casted Lucy Liu! Making for a fun show. But yeah, Elementary doesn’t hold a candle to the Sherlock show. At first you think you’ll hate it cause british shows naturally suck. But then it overtakes you and every season 2 episode is like experiencing the best episode of anything. So good! Should check it out =D If you watch it all, it won’t disappoint!

She won’t. She can’t. The synopsis for episode 3 tells me so. But they’re going to make her special somehow. If you think about it, what made her special in maybe the first two episodes of season 1 was that these vampires are interested in her. Then it was that she looks like Katherine. She’s a doppelganger. But she was still human, you know? Now there isn’t anything that distinguishes her from Katherine: she’s a doppel vamp with two brothers in love with her and who loves both. So I’m sure before the season ends they’ll find something.
Lol rolling my eyes so hard because I know you are right, the reason they are dragging her transition for four eps its to try to make it so special, maybe she will be the key to something else lol.

I don´t think you will like that but I have a feeling that this memorial is not like we assumed about Pastor Young and this interview tidbit makes me thinking it is for Alaric:
THR: The second episode featured a tribute to characters who have come and gone, as well as a very revealing – and human – moment for Damon. Why were those pivotal to include?
Plec: It was our way of tipping our hat, not only to everyone that we’ve lost on the show but to the Alaric (Matt Davis) character, who we wanted to make sure we got to properly mourn and say goodbye to before we moved into our new season and our new story. Also, to give a moment for Elena to say goodbye to her human life, for her to mourn herself because that’s it. In remembering all the people that they’ve lost, they’re able to let their grief come out, deal with it and move forward.

Jesus Christ, is JP serious with this? My God. Alaric’s dead, and she’s STILL trying to make him happen. The only character I care about being mourned is Sheila, because she was the only one where the person who lost her didn’t move on after 2 episodes. Vicky and Jenna never stood a chance, unfortunately, but they are the other two people I would care about.
I guess that spoiler about seeing an old and familiar face will be Alaric in the second episode probably as a ghost. I was really getting my hopes up about seeing Lucy again…

Even better, Grams (Jasmine Guy), a character who had to be killed off, but was done so way too son, returns as the face of Bonnie’s warning. This is a wise woman who knows lots about magic that Bonnie isn’t mature or experienced enough to figure out yet, and as Bonnie does trust her, she is a reasonable representation of good sense, whether she’s really there, or just in Bonnie’s head. Grams also serves another purpose, allowing Bonnie to be punished without hurting any of the major characters.

To me, it’s the story the show has shied away from telling wrt Bonnie. To me it’s her potential. Because truthfully, she hasn’t stopped an evil on the show since season 1 with the device. Elijah’s still alive, Klaus, Rebekah, Damon, and Stefan. All still here. She also didn’t stop Alaric.

I think Matt’s character got assassinated worst than Jeremy did during the Ghost Arc. Jesus Christ. Jesus Christ. Vicky’s screaming from the other side, I swear.
I like what I got of Bonnie. Remember my post about how I’m now reading her as having low self-esteem? Yeah. So what I got was good. I just need to know what the HELL HAPPENED TO SHEILA. This is the second time Bonnie’s basically killed Sheila for these people.
Can I just say that Caroline and Tyler are two characters who are dumb as hell? First of all, Caroline: My God, what are they doing to her character? What are they doing to her?! Her boyfriend’s dead, so she doesn’t know what to do with herself? She’s lost all sense of survival because Tyler’s gone? What the hell? And then she forgets about running away because Tyler’s “back” and that means they can have sex.
Why did Tyler start getting up when he heard Bonnie was still chanting? That was super stupid. They deserve each other.
I think Michael did a great job with Klaus. Better than the finale. I actually saw chemistry when Caroline was yelling at him, and he was yelling back.
I liked the last scene between Klaus and Rebekah. Rebekah was good in some parts and meh in others. But let us describe the many ways she was hurt in this episode. Let us do that. I also got Klaus/Rebekah incest vibes in their last scene.
Bonnie got choked. Even though she’s supposed to be stronger than ever. Splendid. How is she using black magic? I need that explained. She did a specific spell that used black magic when she desiccated Klaus. And she tweaked the spell and did it on herself. Okay. But what about her crossing to the other side? Why does that qualify? What is she saying that’s different?
Jeremy! Bless him. He wasn’t willing to do whatever it takes for Elena to stay human. I heard the wobble in his voice when Bonnie wouldn’t wake up. I also loved him asking what the hell the things on Bonnie’s arms are.

She says Kat proved in this episode that she can handle more. Where has she been? Then again, when Kat acted out the scene in 2.18 where Bonnie was skyping with Elena, Carina MacKenzie said Kat was “finally” good because she was acting against Nina. So this isn’t a surprise. She’s new.
JP says that what happened tonight was a way of alienating Bonnie from her heritage. It’s like, you’ve been alienating her from her heritage since the beginning of season 3. You’ve alienated Bonnie from every side: she has no father, she has no friends, she has no boyfriend, you wrote her to not want to get to know her mother. She.is.alone. So what’s your point? Acting like you did something new. Stop.

I’m going to need Julie to start watching this show, instead of leaving it up to the editors once it’s done shooting. Damon’s always been devil may care. He’s never cared about his behavior or wanted to change it. Did she miss his monologue in season 2 where he said he couldn’t be what Elena wanted him to be? Or how about his hissy-fit in 3.04 when he said he was a “VAMPIRE,” or how about 3.19 where he said he acts out because he doesn’t want expectations placed on him?
TVLINE | Does the fact that he came back and tried to save Caroline count for anything?
JP: That’s the thing with Caroline – as much as she hates him, she also can’t shake him. Hopefully [Elena and Caroline] will realize for each other that in a strange way, it’s incredibly similar to the early Damon/Elena relationship. I’m not saying that it’s going down the same road, by any means. I’m just saying that Caroline, for all her judgement directed at Elena about having any kind of feelings in the past for Damon, may find herself surprised to be struggling with a similar, dangerous attraction to Klaus.
You guys don’t know how happy I am that Bonnie isn’t a part of this crap. Elena and Caroline can have this. They can bond over this. They can have it.

A retcon that wasn’t so good was Jeremy remembering what Vicky was like when she was transitioning. No.
I like how Elena couldn’t see Bonnie. It’s so symbolic of their relationship.
As long as Elena knows Bonnie’s doing “whatever she can” to better her lot in life, she’s free to focus on herself, and her emotions, and how sad she is, and how she doesn’t want this, and her disappointment, etc. You know, like a normal person. She’s free to manage her different, important relationships (Salvatores + assuring Jeremy), etc.
Meanwhile, Bonnie’s concentrating and focusing and working, and trying different spells. And when she finally comes up with something….Elena can’t see her! She can’t see what she’s doing, what she’s done, doesn’t know what Bonnie’s risking, nothing. She doesn’t recognize what she’s doing.
Bonnie’s like, “It’s okay Elena. We’re going home.”
But all Elena knows is that she’s feeling better! She’s just like, “I feel better Stefan. I feel good.” And then Sheila stops Bonnie, and Bonnie’s swearing she has to help Elena, but Elena doesn’t register any of that. She’s just like, “I don’t feel good anymore, Stefan.”
Then Bonnie’s screaming and sending her grandmother to purgatory or whatever and being devastated, and but that doesn’t register on Elena’s radar. She’s just like, “The future is bright. With this ring and you by my side, Stefan, I know everything’s gonna be A-okay, because I’m always okay in the end, relatively speaking.”
That scene is the Elena/Bonnie relationship in a nutshell. Bonnie’s helping, but she’s pretty much invisible to Elena. And Elena never asks her to do any of this stuff. Her representatives Damon and Stefan (especially Stefan) ask her, or Bonnie herself volunteers, and Elena either verbally or non-verbally cosigns, but she always cosigns (except for that one time when she woke Elijah up). If Bonnie doesn’t know better than to go to the end of the world for Elena each and every time, risking body and family, why would Elena be stupid enough to put a stop to a good thing?
Elena is sometimes annoyed that everyone wants to save her, that’s it. It’s sometimes an inconvenience, but she’s not gonna do something like kick the Salvatores to the curb for doing anything and everything to ensure her safety (like killing Abby) or sit Bonnie down and teach her how to put herself first. Hell no. That’s her safety on the line.
I kind of wish Jeremy COULD have seen Grams. Then he could have seen what Bonnie was truly sacrificing and the horror of what she was inadvertently doing to her grandmother just to save Elena – and they could have bonded over that. I have to admit– I am still not over Beremy. I know I should be– but I am not.

Lol. I like that Jeremy doesn’t need direct visuals to know what Bonnie’s going through. I mean he saw the veins in her arm and freaked out, then he saw her start to bleed and freaked out some more, then he saw her pass out and take too long to wake up, and he freaked. It doesn’t take him seeing Bonnie in extreme pain for him to worry about her, because unlike most of the others, he gets that she’s human, not a freaking machine. Or “weapon” as Stefan would call her.
I have to admit– I am still not over Beremy. I know I should be– but I am not.
Hey now, if Jeremy stays on the path he was in this episode wrt Bonnie, and they hashed it out over his mess with the ghost, we could go somewhere with it in season 17.

Vicky was Jeremy’s true love. She is the one he chased for an entire season. He forgot about Anna the day after she died. What happened in season 3 was a total retcon – only there for fanservice
As for Bonnie, he is still looking out for her while Anna is gone from his mind again. He hasn’t put any effort into finding her since she disappeared.

I loved this episode. I can only think of a few problems with it.
1) Elena randomly breaks out of the jail after becoming a vampire…? The original vamp and the 200 year old one couldn’t.
2) Jeremy can’t see the ghost?
3) Um… Bonnie you didn’t ‘cross over to the other side’ you freaking astroprojected to where Elena was in prison. Were you gunna pull her through a wall?!
4) Elena randomly gets a spirit ring on the roof?
1) Elena breaking out was ridiculous. How did she even know Damon was outside? Why did it take Stefan so long to get out of the barn?
2) Jeremy’s power is bullcrap anyways. It was only useful for the retcon and then they had to figure out what to do with it. It should’ve faded away in 3.07.
3) She did cross to the other side because Sheila said the witches could “keep you here.” I doubt they were gonna keep her through a barn. What doesn’t make sense, is why the heck we didn’t see Elena’s spirit. Does that mean she has no soul? I mean, what is it?

No, she has a soul. The writers are just crap at explaining the concept of what Bonnie’s spell was about. If they even cared, since Elena was obviously going to turn anyway.

Anyways, here’s hoping for Hayley/Rebekah lesbian love! Damon/Stefan are devoted to Elena, the human is too boring and she tried to kill him, so she needs a new love interest.

I don’t know. Attempted murder seems to be an important step on the love interest checklist of the show. I wouldn’t count Matt out yet. And there’s nothing to suggest Hayley will be interesting. She could be a Rose (most likely for Tyler though) or a Meredith.
Something that occurred to me during the podcast, but that I thought I’d bring up here is that the set up of this episode for the spell, for the kidnappings, etc. Was all wrong.
Cause Elena should have been with Bonnie while the spell was taking place. It just makes practical sense. Where was Elena meant to go if she followed Bonnie? Where did the Elena, who was only interacting with Stefan while Bonnie was telling her to follow her, think she was going? Why, in fact, did she even feel better?
Now if Elena was going to not be present while Bonnie was performing the spell (which doesn’t even make sense…the lack of actual contact that occurs in this spell doesn’t make sense…in fact the lack of communication during the spell to dessicate Klaus doesn’t make sense. I may be remembering incorrectly, but there’s a level of timing that the spell requires that we weren’t privy to. As an audience we were able to see it happening, but the set-up was tossed aside for the surprise of Klaus getting dessicated instead of Alaric) then when Bonnie crossed over we should have seen her end up somewhere else. The bridge perhaps? Her house? The graveyard? An actual separate plain of existance, so we would at least get some sense of otherness? Who knows? They could have tried harder.
If the writers had thought about it they would have been switching the scene between Elena’s “soul” interacting with Bonnie and Elena’s body/anchor/or what have you interacting with Stefan. So that when Sheila showed up to put an end to things Bonnie would have or could have been pulled to Elena being in that barn with Stefan talking about how she felt better, but then didn’t anymore. Or anything showing a level of actual consideration of the components of the spell. Was Bonnie supposed to return Elena to Elena using the Elena we’d seen struggling with transition throughout the entire episode? That doesn’t make sense. It’s why they should not have brought souls into the equation. But if they were going to it was as easy as explaining that Bonnie needed to get to Elena’s soul before she either 1) died or 2) drank human blood. Which is, admittedly, what they did, but they also threw in a shortened time limit by having Elena be in and out of it for hours.
Would they have let her sleep through making the choice? Cause she really could have. I don’t know. Why did Bonnie only get started on the spell by the time we saw her? We could have easily observed her in medias res with the spell and shown the effect it was having on her body and then had a proper excuse for Elena to have been in and out all day. Otherwise Elena sleeping large chunks of her day away doesn’t make sense when compared to any other vampire we’ve seen transition and that includes Katherine, who knew what she was doing. And Caroline, who very clearly acted on the instinct to survive. I haven’t watched Blood Brothers in a long time, but did Stefan or Damon have any of the sensory overload issues that we saw with Vicki and Elena? I guess they were in the woods. I know Elena’s transition has to be different, but I feel like there should have been line on consistency that is disrupted by 1) Bonnie attempting to bring her back and/or 2) her being a doppelganger who didn’t continue the line of doppelgangers. And maybe they’re going with the second option, but they could have spent more of the premiere dealing with the first.
That said this episode wasn’t bad.

All of these questions. Why did she start feeling better? Is Bonnie’s magical negro-ness now so advanced that just touching her will make the White person feel better? And Elena should’ve been with her. She spent part of the day at her house doing nothing, just waiting for Bonnie to come by with the cure. She could’ve and should’ve braved the sun and met Bonnie at the witch house.

How did Sheila even put an end to things? She didn’t utter a word that sounded like a spell, and she didn’t use telekinesis to pull Elena from Bonnie. She said no, and Elena stumbled back.
It was urgent for Bonnie to do the spell (Stefan must’ve woken her up first thing in the morning), yet she was off in the cellar looking at Klaus’ charred body.

No. They were just sitting in the sun, having a conversation. It didn’t even hurt their eyes to be out in the sun.
The fact doesn’t Elena was a doppelganger is not coming up so far. I can’t even say for sure that it will.
