An Episode You Wish Never Happened

This blog is negative, isn’t it? Lol. Anyway:

Name an episode you wish you could wipe from canon! One from season 1, one from season 2, and one from season 3. Yes, one. And should you be unable to come up with one from season 1, you can choose two from season 2 or 3. And state your reasons! It can be something as simple as, “It was boring.”

Now I don’t want to jump the gun and name Ordinary People for season 3, so I’ll pretend to think on that, plus an episode from seasons 1 and 2.

Name a character decision, scene, or arc you wish you could delete from canon. It can be one character’s decision, multiple characters’ decisions, or a decision, scene, or arc for all of the characters.

  1. I don’t have any real hate for any of the episodes in s1, nothing that I can bring up now, but I’ll come back to it. Maybe the Pilot?

    s2:

The House Guest: I think we’ve broken this episode down a lot here, so I’ll keep it simple: this episode is lazy and the ways the Martins are utilized in this episode is indicative of how sloppy the storytelling, whatever the writers may say or know about telling stories, is in the writers’ room.

As I Lay Dying: Narratively, I’m not sure how the previous 21 episodes led up to As I Lay Dying. Not even for Damon, who actually had an arc throughout the entire season. The most up and down arc this show has managed, but an arc nonetheless. Damon’s realization doesn’t gel with his characterization in s3 and in s2, there was a better and more consistent way to tell the story of Damon realizing that he makes bad choices.

Bonnie and Jeremy make sense, more or less, I believe that she would save Jeremy’s life because she loved him and that he would confront her about the whole “sealed in the witch house” situation. I’ll even give the writers a pass on the video phone situation at the end, but considering the writers failed to give her and Stefan any sort of relationship in s2, I can’t see her contacting the witches in order to save Damon.

Katherine suddenly loved both Damon and Stefan despite all proof to the contrary. Elena likes Damon just the way he is, two episodes after he forced blood down her throat and, timeline wise, maybe four months after he killed her brother because she wouldn’t choose him over Stefan. And we don’t see her coming to this point. I don’t mean “liking Damon just the way he is” I mean being willing to say that.

Oh yeah, Stefan asks her to look out for Damon, knowing that werewolf bites make vampires even more uncontrollable/hungry/violent. Good one, bro.

Elijah got dumber, he could have easily killed Klaus and then raided his stuff in order to find his family, and died because of it.

No one really discusses Jenna or John.

The whole town is watching Gone with the Wind.

And Stefan. This fool. He had no storyline outside of “enabling Damon” and “perfect apologizing boyfriend” and we had over a dozen episodes of him drinking human blood, because he eventually stopped drinking Elena’s blood, and then Klaus breaks him completely with SIX BLOOD BAGS. They could have built to this. They could have made this work. What’s worse they could have made it work with Katherine, without even having to go the Katherine/Stefan route, at least not the healthy Katherine/Stefan route.

Klaus was still alive. Damon didn’t die. And the episode wasn’t about “OH SHIT WE FAILED!” it was about “OH SHIT DAMON IS DYING!”

    No.

s3: This I have to consider: I don’t care for the second episode. Nor can I remember it all that much. We didn’t need an episode about how pointless the werewolves are. Ordinary People, I feel encompasses, not so much in terms of what actually happens in the episode, but narrative effect, everything wrong with the pacing of this show for the last season and a half. Which I will address in a minute.

Stuff I Would Delete From Canon:

Character(s’) Decision(s): Elena’s decision to get back together with Stefan after Vicki’s death; Stefan and Damon and Anna deciding not to just leave town/hide in their cellar for a hot minute while the device took care of business; Stefan’s decision to join Klaus (at least the motives and storyline surrounding it); Katherine saying she loved both Damon and Stefan; Elena forgiving Damon after he killed Jeremy; Jeremy forgiving Damon; 75% of Damon’s decisions in s2 (he could have found one of those willing people that Tyler has found); Jeremy not telling Bonnie about the ghost sooner; Matt (off-screen apparently) forgiving Elena, Damon, and Stefan; any good guy/bad guy character who died, who could have just left and been brought back in

Scene: Any scene with Klaus in Ordinary People; when Bonnie had to comfort Elena after almost being killed by Damon; Caroline telling Damon “you suck”, Damon and Stefan’s non-fight in The Last Day (or whatever the episode was before that); Lexi talking about the power of love in “The Dinner Party,”; Every other scene where Stefan has apologized to Elena; every other scene where Damon has threatened Elena; seeing that girl’s head fall off in the s3 premiere; Damon talking about Stefan’s remorse; 68% of the scenes where Stefan and/or Damon use the word brother more than once, “I came back to this town to start a life with you.” O_____o Stop.; “I like you just the way you are.”; Elena managing to out creep Stefan with her wide eyes of love during “The End of the Affair,”; Any time some one has threatened to kill a vampire and not done it.

Arc: As is: Damon’s arc from last season; Matt and Liz’s mini-nonexistent arc from the end of last season; whatever happened with Tyler/Caroline this season; Elena sorta training with Damon this season; Jeremy’s part in the ghost!arc, as is: the compulsion portion of Stefan’s current arc (and also whatever potentially tragic (tragic as in more potential wasted) end it might come to)

    • The whole town is watching Gone with the Wind.

I lost my mind when they aired this and didn’t have Bonnie comment on it. It is even worse now that they had Anna comment on the Night of Illumination.

  2. Like Olu, I wouldn’t delete any episode from season 1, but the one I might consider, based on memory and the synopsis on tv.com is There Goes The Neighborhood. I know Matt told his mom he’s supposed to be the kid, but did anything else happen, character-wise? The tension between Elena and Caroline was officially dropped after this episode, Stefan and Matt never got closer, Bonnie wasn’t in it, and I can’t remember what Jeremy and Anna did (watch a movie at his house?). The Matt/Kelly and Jeremy/Anna stuff probably could have happened in another episode. But every episode in season 1 meant something for the most part (and for the majority of the characters at that, as well as for the storyline), so I’ll save this erasure.

It’s harder for me to make up my mind when it comes to season 2 than I thought. I want to erase Bad Moon Rising, but that episode was good for Caroline (and Caroline/Stefan, I guess). The reason I want to erase it is because of that freaking roadtrip that ended up not telling us anything. Waste of film!

I’d erase The House Guest so quick. The only reason I wouldn’t erase Daddy Issues is, again, because I’d delete The House Guest. I feel Daddy Issues is easier to take if The House Guest does not exist. Nothing was done about Bonnie losing her powers: Bonnie didn’t care, Caroline didn’t care, and Elena didn’t care. I didn’t need to hear about Jenna’s love life. All of those scenes with Katherine at the Salvatore house were pointless. Two people Bonnie knew died and Elena didn’t give a damn. It was at this juncture that I became sick of Stefan, The Negotiator on first watch. They didn’t delve into the position Luka was in (a position that became complicated because he started seeing Bonnie as a person). Just…everything. Everything must go. Caroline’s singing was pointless and it was the height of the producers being in love with that character and they were riding the fans’ responses.

Looking over the episodes from season 3, it’s amazing how many I want to delete. Especially the ones pre-Bonnie’s return. First on the chopping block is Ordinary People. Everything. Everything must go. Alaric can sympathize with Bonnie in another episode. Elena and Rebekah’s mean girl power struggle was laughable because, ultimately, neither of them was threatening. Those flashbacks are a joke. We were treated to yet another version of Klaus. Stefan and Damon were over the top, and there was that annoying line from Elena.

I would erase The Hybrid from existence. What happened in that episode? Nothing. What did we learn? Nothing. We spent way too much time watching Elena head for a place she never reached. I didn’t need to see Stefan looking at Elena from a distance. Klaus had no idea what he was doing. Those werewolves were lame. Jeremy and Matt’s thing could’ve happened in another episode. They didn’t follow up on Caroline getting shot in the back by Tyler’s mother. Alaric was having his crisis while Damon and Elena tried to banter. It was just a mess.

Special mention to The End of The Affair (I don’t see a point to this episode. I really don’t. It’s like a standalone). And Disturbing Behavior. There are so few scenes from the first half of the season that I would actually keep.

Arc/Decision/Scene: I would delete Elena being quiet when Damon tells her she’s just like Katherine. She would have said something back. Ignoring every questionable reaction (or nonreaction) Elena’s had to Damon hurting either her friends or her, him killing Jeremy should have created a big shift in her attitude toward him and Stefan. She would have had a comeback. She would have reminded him he killed her brother, told him she wanted nothing to do with him, something that would say she used Damon and she knew it and now that he knew it, she did not care one wit. And going forward we would have a better Elena.

Damon would not have killed Jessica or taken up with Andie. He would have died from Tyler’s werewolf bite.

Bonnie would not have done any of the things she did in As I Lay Dying. Except for be confronted by Jeremy. Either Damon would die from the were bite or she would tell Stefan she wasn’t going to prolong his life. She would be scouring MF for Klaus and Elijah (with Caroline and Jeremy’s help). She would not have gone with Elena’s plan. There aren’t many things/scenes of Bonnie’s I’d erase. Surprise, surprise.

Jeremy. His part of the ghost arc. Delete. He would not become buddy-buddy with Damon though I’m open to him not killing him. But once he found out Damon forced his blood down Elena’s throat? He would join UJ in plotting his death.

Caroline. All of the torture scenes with her dad. We all know she walked out of Tyler’s house and later told Bonnie about her sexcapades.

Tyler would actually be pissed at more than just Caroline for Mason’s murder. He would never set foot in the Salvatore mansion.

Matt would not have shown up at the Salvatore mansion to pick up a vampire for homecoming!!! I’m still trying to figure out what that was!

I would erase Katherine from season 3. Erase. her. And of course she never loved Damon.

    • There Goes The Neighborhood. Yes, to all of this. Especially the parts I bolded. There should have still been tension between Caroline and Elena or at least growth in their relationship. And with some development, I would have been interested in seeing the fallout if they had made Matt and Stefan friends. Because fallout would have been necessary. As is this episode works mostly as filler.

I didn’t need to see Stefan looking at Elena from a distance.

But how would we ever know that they love each other, Alta? How would we ever know?

The first half of this season is almost entirely useless.

him killing Jeremy should have created a big shift in her attitude toward him and Stefan. She would have had a comeback. She would have reminded him he killed her brother, told him she wanted nothing to do with him, something that would say she used Damon and she knew it and now that he knew it, she did not care one wit. And going forward we would have a better Elena.

I agree with all of this.

      Yup.

Let me just stop copy/pasting from the character decisions and say that I agree with everything you’ve said. Especially this: Matt would not have shown up at the Salvatore mansion to pick up a vampire for homecoming!!! I’m still trying to figure out what that was!

(I put this in the wrong spot. Would you be able to delete the other comment?)

      • But how would we ever know that they love each other, Alta? How would we ever know?

Lol. How ever would we know that he treasures her if he didn’t stare at her while she stared out of a car window looking all precious and delicate and coveted. Blech.
