Episode 41: Klaus

Episode 41

This episode was so unnecessary, it’s not even funny. Also unnecessary: the Stefan and Damon fight and basically Stefan’s entire attitude whenever interacting with Damon. I struggle with the word ‘doorknob,’ Elena tries to act like she gives people her word on a daily basis, and Alaric/Klaus was not needed in this episode.

  1. OK, just a couple of things.

Firstly, I would be more on the bandwagon with this whole curse/save Elena/kill Elena thing if it wasn’t so pointless. You want me to believe that this gurl is important enough to sacrifice for a supernatural science project. I mean, WTF?! This is the reason? Klaus wants to make werewolf/vampire offspring? Really?! It’s not like if Elena dies then Klaus will become the anti-christ. No, if Elena dies, then a billion year old white man can go on to live a billion more years as a white man. I don’t care how you put it. Klaus wants to be powerful and rule the world. Like get in line! Take a number! What the hell is this? I feel like Klaus has lived too long for such delusions of grandeur. This in itself nulls the whole story line of season 2. I had to watch all these people die and hate Ian Somerhalder all so you can sell me this. Bye.

Secondly, I honestly don’t feel, despite my disdain for Damon and Ian, that Ian likes playing this role. The Andy part. I think he’s probably disgusted that he has to do this. Because before this season, I was really in like with him. And so I watched his interviews and he seemed like a smart man. Like a humanitarian even. And its like as soon as Damon started being a full blown disgrace, he started being one to. It’s just something that I feel.

Lastly, I don’t think that the promo was that bad with Damon’s character. It looked like Elena was in his room, digging thru his shit. He told her to get out. She wanted to act all entitled. Like, don’t question me on something that you wasn’t suppose to see in the first place. You are the one that’s wrong. I’m annoyed and right now until this moments over I’m going to be a dick to you. It wasn’t like he was keeping something important from her. Stefan’s a ripper. She knew this and when he told her she acted like he said he likes cheetos instead of chessey puffs. For me in 2 seconds Elena got on my nerves.

But, I feel you this episode was pointless and thanks for the pod.

    • Secondly, I honestly don’t feel, despite my disdain for Damon and Ian, that Ian likes playing this role.

I tend to agree. Though I felt that way about the main three for most of the second half of the season. There was a distinct lack of…I don’t know what when it came to their performances.

    • I feel like Klaus has lived too long for such delusions of grandeur.

This is actually a good point. You could argue Klaus is a little old for world domination. I would get if this was the sun/moon curse and Klaus couldn’t walk in the daylight, and so he learned about this curse, and he’s been desperate to break it ever since because he wants to walk in the daylight. Or even if, as the first vampire, he sees all vamps as his offspring, so he wants them to walk freely. Wanting to put some babies into the world is…lame…primarily because we don’t know why he wants to do it. There’s a whole bunch of hybrids running around. And?

It wasn’t like he was keeping something important from her.

I feel that he was. He was keeping the fact that Stefan’s been ripping people apart a secret. Despite the fact that she kept coming up with leads; he wouldn’t tell her. She’s been with Stefan for a year, so I don’t get Damon’s reason for keeping this from her. I’m sure it’ll be “to protect her.” One thing that really doesn’t make sense is that Elena never considered that Stefan might be killing people.

  2. – I loved Elena in that clip too. I agree with you that she seemed more mature/together. What you said about fandom’s obsession with Damon’s reaction in that clip is what I was talking about. For a lot of people only Damon existed in that clip. Some people started making excuses for Damon and I think this is one instance where Damon does not need his behavior excused. Not a big deal. Just funny as heck.

    – Can’t wait for Disturbing Behavior

    This episode is so unnecessary
You could be talking about most of the second half of the second season

Even if she can’t use the door knob, why doesn’t she use her voice?
LOL. You are asking these characters to make sense.

    – I thought they were going to do something with Andie hearing about vervain and these rules about compulsion. I am an idiot.

    – I LOLed at JP teasing the return of Trevor. Exactly zero people wanted to see him again. If it was Grams, Emily or Mason, it would be another story.

    – Stefan and Damon have been stalkers from day one.

    – I don’t think that invitations can be revoked in TVD. That is why it is so scary when vampires get invited into the Gilbert house. Remember when the Salvatores killed Elena’s random stalker in season one because he was invited? I think that is in True Blood that invitations can be revoked.

    – Yeah, the whole vampires and Miranda thing was so funny but one possibility is that there was a big age difference between Miranda and Jenna. It is possible that Miranda was already dating Grayson when Jenna was little.

    – Julie said that John was not in these episodes because the actor was unavailable. IIRC, she said on her twitter account that he was in Australia.

    – Stefan had a lot of emotions in this episode because Elena had a lot of emotions. Since he no longer has an identity of his own, he shares Elena’s emotions. Yeah… this is how I made it work in my head. A friend of mine said he was acting crazy because the Damon/Andie thing was irritating him in the back of his head the whole day. Because Damon/Andie is very similar to 1864 Katherine/Stefan. Yet another explanation is that because of Damon’s popularity, the writers introduced Stefan to the underside of the bus over and over again in these episodes.

Really, though, it makes no sense no matter how to slice it.

    – LOL at Elena being the Salvatores’ pet. So true

    – Nothing would have happened if Elena heard the Salvatores’ conversation. She has seen them do a lot and it never fazes her for long.

    – Imo, *everyone* was wrong with their dumbass plans. Bonnie was going to die if she followed through on her and Damon’s plan. And since I care about Bonnie more than I do Elena and since she is not part of the main trio and can actually die, Damon can gtfo with this whole Bonnie will take Klaus on by herself business. But it really bugged me that there wasn’t more brainstorming or strategizing. Shouldn’t Bonnie and Elena/Jeremy have tried to bounce ideas around with the dead witches?

    – The interaction between Elijah, Stefan and Damon reminds me of the interaction between the Salvatore boys and their father in one of the flashbacks. I remember Damon trying to be defiant and Stefan trying to suck up to his father while making excuses for Damon.

    – I thought that Andie was just saying what Damon yearned to hear. I felt like when Andie spoke, it was actually mostly Damon. Like the whole you need to know someone really loves you bit.

    – Elena’s pain only matters because it is tied to the pain of all the men. She is their object of obsession. She is their heart and soul. She is the thing through which they work out their issues. They live through her and for her. She has the ability to set them free….literally in Klaus’ case.

*Sigh* This whole show seems like it is about men gaining power through women’s bodies

    – LOL at “What is she doing?” What is Elena ever doing? Elena is God, an Angel and Helen of Troy combined into one obviously. That is why they love her without question.

    – The show is talking about world domination but I don’t understand why Klaus hasn’t dominated the world already. He had plenty of time. He was already very powerful. He had witches and vampires working for him. What else did he need? It would have made more sense to me if Klaus wanted to break the curse because it was a burden to him personally. Like he felt a piece of him was shut off and he could feel that something was wrong with him everyday. The world domination stuff could have been a side-effect of Klaus connecting to his werewolf side and becoming more aggressive/maniacal as a result. It would have also given us another reason for why the witches did what they did to him. Perhaps they knew that no one could handle being a werewolf and a vampire at the same time without losing their sanity completely.

    – Elena is not allowed to ask any questions because this was about *Elijah*. lol. Idk. I didn’t even notice that because I started to care less about the show’s twists so I stopped paying attention to the details.

    • The world domination stuff could have been a side-effect of Klaus connecting to his werewolf side and becoming more aggressive/maniacal as a result. It would have also given us another reason for why the witches did what they did to him. Perhaps they knew that no one could handle being a werewolf and a vampire at the same time without losing their sanity completely.

That would have actually been pretty good. Like he wasn’t prepared for the pain of the transformation and that would, given his ability to shift anytime he wants, drive him insane after awhile.

    • and I think this is one instance where Damon does not need his behavior excused.

I agree. What he’s saying is bad, so there’s no need to explain or look deeper or make it into a problem (for me. Lol).

You could be talking about most of the second half of the second season

I just wanted The Last Day. My goodness.

Remember when the Salvatores killed Elena’s random stalker in season one because he was invited?

That’s true. So invites can’t be revoked which explains Stefan and Damon’s freakout. Scary.

      – Julie said that John was not in these episodes because the actor was unavailable. IIRC, she said on her twitter account that he was in Australia.

Oh okay. I thought this was a dodgy storytelling decision.

A friend of mine said he was acting crazy because the Damon/Andie thing was irritating him in the back of his head the whole day. Because Damon/Andie is very similar to 1864 Katherine/Stefan.

I think that’s the least likely explanation. Lol.

      – Nothing would have happened if Elena heard the Salvatores’ conversation. She has seen them do a lot and it never fazes her for long.

      True.

But it really bugged me that there wasn’t more brainstorming or strategizing.

That bugs the crap out of me too. I’m so used to seeing it on other shows of this nature.

      – Elena’s pain only matters because it is tied to the pain of all the men. She is their object of obsession. She is their heart and soul. She is the thing through which they work out their issues. They live through her and for her. She has the ability to set them free….literally in Klaus’ case.

That. is so true. And that last sentence…*Shudder*

Yes! So Klaus could start off as a sympathetic character and slowly lose his mind.

  3. – sneak peek: The clip made me hope. I thought the scene was pretty well-played in terms of character and story. I don’t know what I would do if I encountered the Damon fans you encounter.

I think it’s interesting that you put it like that: Damon confronts Elena with the hard truths and Stefan coddles her because it’s also displayed in how revelation scenes get played differently between the two. Stefan shares the information he wants in a manner suggesting candor and gentleness. I’ll tell you about my past. Here’s the truth. I use to be a murderer but now I’m not because I’m good. Damon is simply honest, even if at times it resolves itself into a desperate need to be loved, I’m a monster. What do you expect? You’re being foolish. This is how it needs to be done. If the show were less interested in telling us who the good brother was and who the bad brother was then they wouldn’t have to do much to let us in on what these tendencies say about their characters.

    – Fan-wanking Katherine being able to get in Alaric’s house: Maybe because it’s a temporary housing situation? And by the time Stefan gets there Alaric hasn’t been back yet. Maybe there’s a way to forfeit invitation rites or whatever. The building may be considered public space but the apartments within the building are private spaces. I think of it as a pizza delivery man situation.

    – In s1, Stefan gave Caroline vervain and it didn’t cure her of being able to be compelled. Damon got her to come to the house the next day and the vervain wouldn’t have passed through her system by then.

    – Klaus certainly made Katherine think he was going to do things with her and Elijah was also looking at her weirdly.

I hope Elena isn’t related to the Originals. In fact if that happened I would have to start watching the Bonnie Bennett Friday Afternoon Clipshow.

    – Do you think they made Katherine so lovesick in order to justify her telling Elena it’s okay to love them both? It’s a bit of a stretch, but you know. The writers like those. Her lines in the flashbacks just did not gel with her character at all. Especially when you consider the whole Stefan situation. It’s also a dickbag thing to say.

    – Is anyone doing anything about Andie? Nope.

    – Ugh a scene between Stefan and Matt would have been…potentially stunning. If the writers didn’t foul it up. Could have juxtaposed nicely to their scene in the double date episode.

    – Do the writers even remember what the characters say or think or do after they’ve had them say or do or think them?

    – Stefan disagrees with Elena in order to prove that they are partners and equals and shit and giggles stuff like that. He respects her agency.

    – If the writers thought about things like how Klaus!Alaric was able to remain in Elena’s house this would be a different show. Potentially more fun.

    – Yeah, Stefan revealing everything was…completely unnecessary.

    – Why did Elena’s mother know about vampires? I guess Carol Lockwood wasn’t a founding family descendant either. Maybe it’s something you marry into. Though I guess she was telling stories way before she would have married into it. They copped out on the reveal.

    – YES. The writers completely failed to make Matt’s reaction make sense post-The House Guest.

    – Stefan crying confused me the first time around. It is oddly hilarious now. Stefan’s reaction is completely inconsistent with his character. He was emotional twice last season 1) when Lexi died and 2) when he was having his pre-vervain shot freakout over wanting to kill people and nearly doing it. Even when he told Elena he was a vampire last year he was collected. His urgency was controlled. This season he was crying all over the place and a hotmess of emotions that Stefan doesn’t usually display. He’s not an open book. At least he shouldn’t be. Having talked myself back into being a Stefan fan, s2 is a fucking mess reaction-wise for him.

    – The writers don’t remember that roadtrip. The fight happened because…these two are idiots and needed to fight. I guess.

    – The underlying thread of Paul Wesley interviews is that he’s willing to sell the Stefan is so in love with Elena line, but he’s bored playing the “perfect” boyfriend. The cast often sounded like they’re amused/bored/annoyed by what was going on during s2.

    – If I had a nickel for every time I saw someone cheer Damon in that scene with Andie I’d need to get rid of that money fast. Or burn it.

    – Shouldn’t Elijah have been hungry? He hadn’t been dead for that long. At least Stefan had vervain for an excuse.

Why isn’t Elena completely freaked out by all of these dudes being up on her because she looks like they’re dead girlfriend/possibly mother/sister/ situation?

“By removing the dagger, I have proven myself.” WHAT? I need an ugly laughing gif for this moment.

    – He must have been bored.

    – Africa is just one big place. One big place. Full of shit to carve up. The commentary is an accident and a bit of a sad one.

    – Who goes around giving their word nowadays? Except for hitmen.

    – Elijah’s dad killed his wife’s lover and his entire family. Don’t forget that. He killed his entire family. Not that it makes it much better. I’m pretty sure they didn’t have to make them enemies. Or they could have made them natural enemies if it was necessary.

    – I’m convinced that Elijah doesn’t know shit about what Klaus actually wants. Because what is a vampire to do with world domination?

    – The problem with witches being the only one’s capable of killing a supernatural creature is twofold for me 1) Alaric killed that vampire in s1, right? and 2) I like the idea of it, but I also have issues with supernatural mythologies that leave regular humans unable to protect themselves in anyway. Like if I can’t accidentally poke this guy with a pencil and watch him die, what’s the point?

    – Elena couldn’t have said, “My friend Bonnie,” it would have been that simple.

    – I was over the gotcha moments by this point.

    – The pauses in this episode were like a bad SNL sketch.

    – How are there so many episodes? Dear lord, I was expecting you to say that the next episode with the ritual. Stefan drank more blood after Damon stabbed him with like a banister than Klaus forced him to drink. I’m pretty sure he did anyway. That’s one of the things I remember about the next episode.

    • I use to be a murderer but now I’m not because I’m good.

      Just reading it though…smh.

I hope Elena isn’t related to the Originals. In fact if that happened I would have to start watching the Bonnie Bennett Friday Afternoon Clipshow.

      Lol.

      – Do you think they made Katherine so lovesick in order to justify her telling Elena it’s okay to love them both?

      Absolutely, one hundred percent, yes.

      – Stefan crying confused me the first time around. It is oddly hilarious now.

I found it hilarious the first time, and it’s just puzzling now. I agree with you about the difference between Stefan’s emotions in season 1 and season 2. Damon wasn’t the only one doing a lot of crying in season 2.

The cast often sounded like they’re amused/bored/annoyed by what was going on during s2.

      Yep.

      – Shouldn’t Elijah have been hungry?

      That’s a good point.

Why isn’t Elena completely freaked out by all of these dudes being up on her because she looks like they’re dead girlfriend/possibly mother/sister/ situation?

Because she can handle anything thrown at her.

“By removing the dagger, I have proven myself.” WHAT? I need an ugly laughing gif for this moment.

      Lol!

Oh, did Elijah say he killed the whole family? It would make sense that he’d kill the whole family, but…were werewolves back then just one giant pack?

      – The problem with witches being the only one’s capable of killing a supernatural creature is twofold for me 1) Alaric killed that vampire in s1, right? and 2) I like the idea of it, but I also have issues with supernatural mythologies that leave regular humans unable to protect themselves in anyway. Like if I can’t accidentally poke this guy with a pencil and watch him die, what’s the point?

Alaric killed Logan, but he wouldn’t be able to kill someone like Klaus or Elijah or maybe even Rose. So it would get harder for the humans, but there can always be one witch (or several if they band together) who can do it even if they die in the process. Elijah said only the servants of nature can kill any supernatural creature. I hope that’s what I heard. Which would make more sense if we knew of more creatures. Right now we only know of three.

      – How are there so many episodes? Dear lord, I was expecting you to say that the next episode with the ritual.

I know, right?! I was expecting to get to the part where Damon force-fed Elena his blood, but noooope. That’s the next episode.

    • Do the writers even remember what the characters say or think or do after they’ve had them say or do or think them?

      NOPE!

. This season he was crying all over the place and a hotmess of emotions that Stefan doesn’t usually display.

actually it’s not Stefan. they caught Paul in a moment of frustration over his character’s development and thought it was so good that they just threw it into the episode. :X hehehe

      – Africa is just one big place. One big place. Full of shit to carve up. The commentary is an accident and a bit of a sad one.

They always talk about Africa like it’s Australia. Every one knows about Sidney. Some people know about Egypt (which is a country inside the continent of Africa, but whatever!)

      LMAO hit-men and mobsters!

      – The pauses in this episode were like a bad SNL sketch. lol True!

  4. She looks more … mature?

Well she is turning 18 Alta. What am I going to do if I can’t make fun of Elena anymore? O_O

They don’t listen to the witches/warlocks so there is no other option.

Yes Katherine drinking the vervain is contrived. And why Katherine wouldn’t already know about the loopholes? She’s older.

You know why the witches have to be on their knees.

Omg Stefan says ‘Hey Andie‘? I remember

What Werewolves are older …? Hehe

I don’t know the mechanics of these vampires.

What? Jenna would be safe? O_o Elena didn’t learn her lesson from lying to Jeremy.

Kat was not there because Nina can’t play both parts.

If Elena heard them talking about her she wouldn’t do anything except tell them to stop fighting over her. Waaaaah!

If Stefan found out about the compulsion he might have to kill his brother, I think. They had a little choke out.

Ugh. But this is the loophole.

This is abuse and it’s gross to have her running out in her underwear. I compared Andie to some fan girls … because …
    Rape apologist, so nasty.

    “Growth!” no

We see Andie still in the previews. I can’t believe they are still showing them in the previews.

They are vampires. They are monsters. They are not my heroes.

All of Elena’s loyalties are based on good memories that other people had of her of someone who looked like her. What does a doppelganger do? Because I feel like this is a part of the power of a doppelganger. There is no reason for this. None at all. Elena is a horrible liar.

Elena has proven herself as a betrayer.

You might want to drop that Warlock thing. How many times have they said “warlock”.

I think it’s just natural balance for the witches. Things must replenish themselves. Maybe Vampirism came because a witch/warlock tried too find a loophole to never weaken from magical over use. They lost their life in turn but became immortal and unable to do further magic because they have nothing to draw from.

Original vampires are impervious … so far. But maybe their “off-spring‘s” blood got deluded and they became weakened by the sun and other things were found to hurt them. Maybe the originals have a special curse/spell that protects them from dying the way other vampires would.

Werewolf bites are like snake bites to vampires. I haven’t seen a vampire drink from a werewolf yet. Unless I’m mistaken.

You said it Alta … I’m just gonna sit over here and bask in the truth. Yes, white male narrative is the most important … or so they want us to believe.

The sun and moon curse is fake and everyone YELLED TOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLO!

What the hell is the word of a 17 year- old 21 century chick? Really what has she sworn to ever? OMG MIND LINK!

It’s like in the bible story with Abraham, Hagar and Sarah. They are the ancestors of the Jewish line (Sarah) and the Persian line (Hagar). And they are still fighting to this day! Over the Damn birthright, which is probably the land.

Here ending the bible lesson. ;P

LOL Alta is done with the parallels.

Undead procreation is gross. So he’s like a zombie werewolf. What is this!?

Angel tried to drag the world into hell in season 2. Lol

Sometimes Elena is nancy drew and sometimes she’s a doll.

THANK GOD … Klaus was a snore …

So many pauses because they needed to fill the time. God bless you Alta for getting through this.

    Tyler come back, right?

    • Vicki did drink from Tyler but that was before he made the transition.

And I’m sort of hoping we find out that witches can be vampires, considering the existence of ghost and leaving behind energy would suggest that there is something to draw from in death. Maybe not the same sort of powers though? But we’ll never find out because the writers don’t care about witches.

Because I feel like this is a part of the power of a doppelganger. There is no reason for this. None at all. Elena is a horrible liar.

It would be interesting if illogical if attractive people was part of the doppelganger’s power. Though repelling attention would probably make more sense. An explanation of some sort is in order because Elena and Katherine aren’t that special.

    • What am I going to do if I can’t make fun of Elena anymore?

I know, right? I really had that thought while watching the clip because, after spending this summer with her annoying me, I liked what she said and the way she acted.

Kat was not there because Nina can’t play both parts.

      Well true.

You might want to drop that Warlock thing. How many times have they said “warlock”.

      One *____*.

I think it’s just natural balance for the witches. Things must replenish themselves.

I think that’s the case too.

Angel tried to drag the world into hell in season 2. Lol

Lol. I forgot about that, but it was done better!!!!

Flail or vent
